What type of work do you do at PolySystems? What are your responsibilities?
I am currently the manager of PolySystems east coast office located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. I am responsible for managing and working on client installations of PolySystems software. In addition, I provide support to existing clients for any questions about our software as well as general actuarial consulting.
How does your work help your clients be ready for what's next? How has your and your team's work made an impact for your clients?
Since PolySystems includes updates to valuation regulations in its software, we stay one step ahead of our clients future needs by monitoring the development of any new regulations. Clients we have helped with software implementation typically have a more streamlined financial reporting process which often requires a smaller valuation support staff and results in the valuation actuary spending more time analyzing results rather than producing results.
Tell us about your professional activities.
I am a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). I am a former Chairperson of the Financial Reporting Section of the SoA and also the former editor of the Financial Reporting Section newsletter. I have given numerous presentations at SoA meetings, where topics have included modeling, GAAP, PBA and Statutory Codification.
How did you come to work in this line of work? What experience do you bring to your job at PolySystems?
I was a Valuation Actuary for a mid-size mutual insurance company, where I worked for 21 years. In fact, as Valuation Actuary, I chose PolySystems to be our software vendor for all our valuation software. This has provided me a unique perspective in my current position. Having been on the user side, implementing PolySystems software as a client, I have an appreciation for the issues and objectives facing my current clients as I assist them from the vendor perspective in implementing our software. I am also very aware, from a first-hand point of view, of all the advantages that can be realized from implementing PolySystems software.
What do you enjoy most about working at PolySystems?
At PolySystems, I enjoy the working environment, primarily the close-knit atmosphere that exists amongst all the employees and management. There is a real sense of a team philosophy that makes working here unique compared to most other companies. In addition, having an interactive role with clients in helping them achieve their goals and improve their processes is a positive aspect of the job.
What skills do you need to do your job at PolySystems?
The skills required to be successful in my job are the ability to juggle various tasks at the same time, the ability to communicate to others in a way which is straight-forward and clear, as well as the ability to listen to the concerns and issues of others. Of course, having a strong technical background in valuation and a good knowledge of the software doesn't hurt either.
